Have questions about how to apply?
Check out these helpful tutorials to guide you through the process:
A Business Tax Receipt (BTR) is required under Florida Statute 205. and City Code Section 62-6. It is the local business tax charged for the privilege of engaging in or managing any business, profession, or occupation within the City of Ocala.
The tax applies to any person who:
Maintains a permanent business location or branch office within the City
Conducts business within City limits
Engages in interstate commerce where not otherwise prohibited by law
A BTR confirms that the required local business tax has been paid.
How a BTR Differs from a State or Professional License
A Business Tax Receipt is sometimes incorrectly referred to as a “business license,” but it is not the same as a state or professional license.
A BTR does not:
Certify or authorize a person to perform regulated work
Replace any required state licensing
Serve as a professional credential
If your business activity is regulated by the State of Florida, you may be required to hold a separate state or professional license in addition to obtaining a City Business Tax Receipt.
When a DBPR License May Also Be Required
Certain businesses and occupations require state licensing through the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR). Examples include:
Contractors
Cosmetology professionals
Food service establishments
Other regulated professions
Florida law clarifies that regulatory permits, registrations, examinations, and inspections are separate requirements and are in addition to a local Business Tax Receipt.
If you are unsure whether your business requires additional state licensing:
Contact DBPR directly through their website above, or
Call City of Ocala staff at 352-629-8487 for general guidance.
