Apprenticeship Program

Ocala Electric Utility (OEU) offers a four-year apprentice program sponsored by the State of Florida’s Department of Education. The program consists of logging 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under the direct supervision of their foreman. Apprentices are also required to complete 48 related lessons, each with a written test, and a total of 144 hours of classroom/online instruction per year.

The program is broken up into eight, six-month periods. For each period apprentices must demonstrate proficiency in eight to twelve job-related tasks, while being continuously monitored and supervised for trade competency by their foreman and the apprenticeship committee.

Completion of OEU’s apprenticeship program grants the employee the right to be regarded as a Journeyman or Craftworker in one of four electric trades:

  • Line worker
  • Substation Electrician
  • Meter Technician
  • Electric System Operator

The new Journeyman or Craftworker then continues their trade with OEU in their respective trade and department.

Apprenticeships are only available to OEU trainees.  If interested in a training position as the first step toward a career in electric work please go to https://governmentjobs.com/careers/cityofocala and search for trainee positions.  Be sure they are with the Ocala Electric Utility!
