Weather the Water.
Storm Season Is Here. Prepare Today.
Storm season begins June 1 through November 30. However, severe weather can happen at any time, but you can be ready. Ocala Water Resources works every day to keep your water safe, flowing, and reliable, especially during severe weather. What you do at home also plays an important role in protecting our water system and your property. During heavy rain, wastewater systems can become overwhelmed. When that happens, excess water can lead to backups and flooding. Conserving water at home helps reduce pressure on the system and protects your home and community. Prepare today, and be ready to weather the water.
Before the Storm
Prepare your home and water system. Take a few simple steps now to protect your home and water:
- Turn off irrigation systems.
- Know where your main water shutoff valve is located.
- Check for leaks or signs of water damage.
- Store emergency water:
- At least 1 gallon per person, per day for three days.
- Fill tubs and sinks for toilet flushing and sanitation.
- Live in a flood-prone area? Know your risk and consider insurance.
During the Storm
Stay safe and conserve water. Heavy rain can put stress on the system. Help protect it:
- Stay away from flooded areas. Never drive, walk, or swim in floodwater.
- Florida floodwater can contain raw sewage, bacteria, and chemicals.
- Conserve water when possible:
- Take shorter showers.
- Avoid laundry and dishwashing.
- Flush only when necessary.
- Use stored water for sanitation.
- Follow local alerts and updates from the city and county.
After the Storm
Recover and restore safely. Once the storm passes, take these steps:
- Check your home for leaks, water damage, or sewer odors.
- Report sewer odors or system concerns to the city.
- Wear gloves and boots when cleaning around floodwater.
- Never open sewer manholes.
- Run water briefly if it hasn’t been used.
- Document damage for insurance purposes.
- Private well owners should test water before resuming use.

Why This Matters
During storms, every gallon counts. Reducing water use at home helps protect our water system and your home from backups and flooding. Small steps now can prevent bigger problems later.
