Net Metering with Ocala Electric Utility (OEU)

Net Metering allows OEU customers with renewable energy systems—like solar panels—connect to the power grid and offset their electricity costs.

How It Works:

• Customers generate their own electricity using renewable sources (solar, wind, etc.) potentially reducing their energy bill.
• Excess energy produced is sent back to the grid and purchased by OEU at a wholesale rate.
• Your system must be sized to match your home’s energy use (max 2 MW).
• OEU calculates your annual usage to ensure proper system sizing.

OEU Community Solar

Going solar is a big decision and it is important to be informed of your solar options. Understanding the maintenance required with solar helps you make the right decision for your family and/or business. Ocala Electric Utility (OEU) is expanding solar capacity within the community and we encourage our customers to do the same. We are your hometown, reliable, public power provider and we are here to assist you with all your solar needs.

Are you interested in clean, renewable energy at an affordable price? Ocala Electric Utility is part of the Florida Municipal Solar Project, a large-scale community solar energy project that enables us to provide renewable energy to our customers.

Florida Municipal Solar Project

The Florida Municipal Solar Project is a joint initiative of 13 municipal electric utilities through the Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA). It is one of the largest municipally backed solar projects in the United States.

The project consists of four utility-scale solar farms that generate a combined 300 megawatts (MW) of clean, zero-emission energy—enough to power approximately 60,000 Florida homes. Each solar facility produces between 74.5 MW and 74.9 MW of electricity.

The first two solar sites, Harmony Solar Energy Center and Taylor Creek Solar Energy Center, began commercial operation in June 2020. Two additional facilities, Rice Creek Energy Center and Whistling Duck Energy Center, came online in January 2025 and December 2025, respectively.

OEU's Participation

OEU participates in the Florida Municipal Solar Project to increase renewable energy resources for its customers while maintaining reliable and affordable electric service.

Phase I of the project was completed on June 30, 2020. Through Phase I, OEU began receiving 7 MW of solar power.

Phase II, completed in 2025, added two additional solar farms to the project. Upon completion of Phase II, OEU received an additional 10 MW of solar power, increasing OEU's total solar allocation from the Florida Municipal Solar Project to 17 MW.

This investment supports OEU's commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio and expanding the use of renewable energy resources for the communities it serves.
